• La Bibliothèque des jeunes de Montréal est une bibliothèque de quartier invitante où chaque enfant peut découvrir la magie de la lecture, où l’imagination est débordante et où apprendre est amusant.  Depuis 1929, la Bibliothèque, une organisation sans but lucratif, offre un service gratuit pour tous les montréalais.

• The Montreal Children’s Library is a welcoming community library where any child can discover the magic of reading, where imaginations flourish, and where learning is fun.  Since 1929, the Library, a non-profit organization, has been providing free library service to all Montrealers.

Ingrid from The Redpath Museum visited our library on December 6^th to present a super workshop on seahorses.  The children actually got to see tiny live seahorses as well as mounted specimens. Then they were treated to a power point presentation which introduced them to the life of a seahorse.  They had a wonderful time discovering the seahorses on the screen, despite their amazing camouflage. Last, but not least, they made their own seahorse ornaments to take home. Ingrid was very impressed with the quality of the questions that our young scientists asked!  It was a wonderful experience.

Ingrid du Musée Redpath a visité la bibliothèque le 6 décembre dernier pour présenter un formidable atelier sur les hippocampes. Les enfants ont pu observer de minuscules hippocampes vivants. Nous avons aussi visionné une présentation power point expliquant la vie de ces petits animaux. Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir à regarder des photos d’hippocampes bien camouflés dans leur environnement. Finalement, les enfants ont pu créer leur propre ornement en forme d’hippocampe pour amener à la maison comme souvenir. Ingrid était bien impressionnée de la qualité des questions posées par les jeunes scientifiques! Ce fut une incroyable expérience pour tous!

Puzzle Theatre presented a super puppet show for the pre-school crowd entitled “La Petite Dent”  Sixty-four children from YWCA, Concordia, Montreal General and McGill Daycares laughed and applauded as they learned all about the parts of the tooth, how to take care of your teeth and the fact that you will have two sets of teeth.  The presentation was comic/slapstick and, at the same time, full of excellent information.  The tooth puppets and the evil bacteria were great.  The teachers were very impressed!

Le Puzzle Theatre nous a présenté un merveilleux spectacle de marionnettes intitulé “La Petite Dent”. Soixante-quatre enfants des garderies du YWCA, de Concordia, du Montreal General et de McGill ont bien ri et applaudi en apprenant toutes les parties d’une dent, comment en prendre soin et le fait que nous avons deux séries de dents. La présentation était bien comique, et une excellente source d’information en même temps. Les marionnettes de dents et de bactéries étaient géniales. Les éducateurs étaient bien impressionnés!

Thanks to a grant from The Canada Council for the Arts, award winning author Alan Cumyn was able to visit our library this month. He has written three books for children, “The Secret Life of Owen Skye”, “After Sylvia” and “Dear Sylvia”. Sixty Grade 5 and 6 students from Westmount Park School attended the reading. The reality and humour of Alan’s characters kept students and teachers laughing. He is a natural story teller! The students’ questions were excellent and showed that they were really engaged. Books for Westmount Park School Library were brought to Alan for signing and then, it was time to go.

Grâce à une subvention du Conseil des Arts du Canada, l’autheur primé Alan Cumyn nous a rendu visite à la bibliothèque. Il est l’auteur de trois livres pour enfants, «The Secret Life of Owen Skye», «After Sylvia» et «Dear Sylvia». Soixante élèves de cinquième et sixième année de l’école Wesmount Park School étaient présents pour l’occasion. La réalité et l”humour des personnages d’Alan ont bien fait rire les élèves et les enseignants. C’est un excellent conteur d’histoire! Les élèves ont posé de bonnes questions, prouvant qu’ils étaient bien intéressés par la rencontre. Puis, Alan a signé les livres qui appartenaient déjà à la bibliothèque de l’école, et enfin ce fut l’heure de partir.

We were happy to host a visit by Nick Oldland to Westmount Park School.  This visit was made possible by a grant from the Canada Council.  Nick is the author and illustrator of “The Great Big Bear Hug”, Make the Moose out of Life” and “The Busy Beaver”.  Two Grade 2 classes spent a wonderful morning with Nick as he shared his books and his talents as an artist.  He challenged the students to think of unusual subjects that the bear might be hugging.  As each child made a suggestion, Nick would complete a drawing on his sketch pad, autograph the page and give it to the student.  It was such a positive experience for these children to see the ideas from their imaginations brought to life on the page by a professional artist.  Nick also did a drawing for each classroom.

Nous étions heureux d’accueillir Nick Oldland à l’école Westmount Park School. Cette visite a été possible grâce à une subvention du Conseil des Arts du Canada. Nick est l’auteur et l’illustrateur des livres “L’ours qui aimait les arbres”, “L’orignal qui avait la frousse” et “Le castor qui travaillait trop “. Les élèves de deuxième année ont eu beaucoup de plaisir à écouter ses histoires et à en apprendre un peu plus sur son métier. Nick a mis les élèves au défi de trouver des objets inusités que l’ours pourrait caliner et il en a fait des dessins qu’il a remis aux enfants. Ce fut une merveilleuse expérience pour les enfants de voir les idées de leur imagination prendre forme par un artiste professionel. Nick a également fait un dessin pour chaque classe.

We had the most amazing visit from Merephantoms.  Using a light deflector for a screen and an overhead projector to add scenery, the two animators created a shadow puppet version of the story of the fierce dragon, George, the mouse, and the beautiful princess.  The puppets were so delicately created and so skillfully manipulated that it was a joy for both teachers and children to watch. After the performance, the children were invited behind the screen in small groups.  They learned about how their shadows increase and diminish depending on where they are standing behind the screen.  They learned the concept of “waiting in the wings” and then they had the opportunity to put on their own mini plays, using the same puppets. Excellent experience.

Nous avons eu des invités incroyables: les Merephantoms. À l’aide d’un déflecteur de lumière comme écran et d’un projecteur pour les paysages, les deux animateurs ont créé un spectacle de marionnettes pour l’histoire du dragon féroce, George, la souris et la belle princesse. Les marionnettes étaient fabriquées si délicatement et manipulées si agilement que le tout fut un vrai plaisir pour les enfants ainsi que les enseignants. Après la performance, les enfants étaient invités derrière l’écran en petits groupes. Ils ont appris à grandir et rapetisser leurs ombres en se plaçant à différents endroits derrière l’écran. Ils ont appris à jouer sur scène, mais aussi à rester hors scène pour laisser la place aux autres. Puis, ils ont eu l’opportunité de faire leurs propres petits spectacles avec les marionnettes. Ce fut une très belle expérience!

Our library is now beautifully decorated for Halloween, so come quick and you’ll get a chance to read some pretty spooky books for the special occasion!

 

Patrick wanted to participate in the library’s summer reading program, so he went to the pool to get in the mood for this year’s theme “Splash!”. He started his day by going on the slide to enter the pool. The water was quite cold, but luckily Patrick has a big thick fur to keep him warm.

Pour participer au club de lecture d’été Splouff de la bibliothèque, Patrick a profité d’une belle journée pour aller à la piscine! Il a commencé par glisser sur la glissade afin d’entrer dans l’eau. L’eau était plutôt froide, mais heureusement, Patrick a une fourrure chaude pour le réchauffer!

Then, Patrick met Newton, the pool’s lifeguard. Newton is a very nice giraffe who watches over the pool to make sure everybody is safe and that they obey the rules of the pool. Patrick learned that it is very important not to run on the side of the pool because you could get hurt.

Puis, Patrick a rencontré le sauveteur Newton. C’est une girafe bien gentille qui s’assure que tous les enfants sont en sécrutié et qu’ils respectent les règlements de la piscine. Patrick a appris qu’il était important de ne pas courir sur le bord de la piscine afin de ne pas se blesser.

Patrick had a lot of fun at the pool, but he was happy to come home to the library to start reading books again!

Patrick s’est bien amusé à la piscine, mais il était tout de même heureux de rentrer à la bibliothèque pour recommencer à lire!

 

 

As part of the Blue Met celebrations, Rina Singh, children’s author and photographer, visited our library to share her newest book, ”Nearly Nonsense” with two Grade 2 classes from Westmount Park School.  Rina developed a good rapport with the children and their responses to her wonderful Hodja stories showed that they were really listening and thinking.

Pour le festival Metropolis Bleu, Rina Singh, auteur de livres pour enfants et photographe, est venue à notre bibliothèque pour partager l’histoire de son nouveau livre “Nearly Nonsense” avec deux classes de deuxième année de l’école Westmount Park School. Rina et les élèves ont bien interagi ensemble et les réponses des jeunes aux fabuleuses histoires de Hodja ont démontré qu’ils écoutaient et réfléchissaient bien.

In celebration of Canadian Children’s Book Week, Kevin Sylvester, children’s author, illustrator and CBC national sportscaster, visited our library and spoke to 45 students from Westmount Park School.  They were enthralled by his sports stories (all of them true!) and they loved his new series, featuring the 14 year old chef/detective.  In the course of talking about famous athletes, he pointed out to his audience that excelling at one thing is not enough. You have to be a nice person as well.  He gave the students a lesson in cartooning and he presented the library with an autographed cartoon of a hockey player.

Afin de célébrer la semaine canadienne du livre jeunesse, l’auteur-illustrateur et reporter sportif pour CBC, Kevin Sylvester, a visité notre bibliothèque pour parler à 45 jeunes de l’école Westmount Park School. Les élèves étaient captivés par ses histoires sportives (qui étaient toutes vraies!) et ils ont adoré sa nouvelle série dans laquelle figure un chef/détective de 14 ans. Tout en parlant d’athlètes célèbres, il a souligné que ce n’était pas suffisant d’exceller dans une chose. Il est important d’être une bonne personne aussi. Il a donné une lesson de dessin aux élèves et a donné à la bibliothèque un dessin d’un joueur de hockey qu’il a autographié.

Shane Peacock, author of the “The Boy Sherlock Holmes” series, visited our library and talked to 50 students from Westmount Park School about reading and writing books. He began his presentation by talking about sports.  He urged them to read about what really interests them.  As an example he talked to them about Sumo wrestling which is a passion of his. He is also interested in high wire walking and this has featured in a couple of his books, including “The Great Farini”.  He encouraged them to write, using their background reading as the basis for creating realistic fiction that will ring true with their readers and captivate their audience as these students were captivated by him.

Shane Peacock, l’auteur de la série  “The Boy Sherlock Holmes” a visité notre bibliothèque ainsi que 50 élèves de l’école Westmount Park School pour leur parler de lire et écrire des livres. Il a commencé sa présentation en parlant de sports. Il a insisté sur l’importance de lire à propos de ce qui nous intéresse. Par exemple, il leur a parlé de combat sumo, qui est une de ses passions. Il est aussi fasciné par le funambulisme, qui est un aspect de plusieurs de ses livres, tel que “The Great Farini”. Il a encouragé les jeunes à écrire en se servant de leur expérience de lecteurs pour créer des histoires réalistes qui captiveront des lecteurs de la même façon qu’ils étaient captivés par Shane.
